Eastern Open41st EASTERN OPEN 2010 10 April - 22 May | Shakespeare Barn, Fermoy Gallery & Red Barn

The annual Eastern Open continues to be one of the artistic highlights of the year for many artists and the viewing public as the competition and exhibition goes from strength to strength from its origins in the Foundation1960’s. Continuing to draw together a wide range of new work by established and emerging visual artists, it is has become the Eastern Region’s largest open submission of contemporary art.
We are indebted to the local and national sponsors who contribute towards the array of generous awards including £3,000 Best in Show and are delighted to continue to showcase the best of digital practice in the region after last year’s successful pilot. Artist postcards have also returned (by public demand!), conveniently displayed in a scrolling digital format with access to the real thing for purchase and to take away at only £20 each.

Artists from 7 counties have this year been selected by a distinguished panel of national judges: Richard Layzell - Artist and Aspire Project Leader; Dr Richard Gant, Head of Quality, Liverpool School of Art & Design, Liverpool John Moores University and Claire Wilcox, Senior Curator, Fashion, Victoria & Albert Museum. Together they have provided a unique and inspiring overview of the current work on offer from artists in the East.

AspireASPIRE
Aspire, the experimental project involving a pyramid of shared learning about the arts through the arts, has been building momentum since its inception in October 2009. Lead by prestigious artist and entrepreneur, Richard Layzell, the Aspire core participants (6 Creative Apprentices, 2 regional and 3 local artists) have been reaching out to the public and capturing their imagination and memories through the ‘Lost & Found Bureau & Repository’ and via recent rural community workshops lead by the young apprentices. The final phase of year one is fast approaching with some innovative ideas, exhibitions and events taking place over the Whitsun weekend both on and offsite under the guise of document|a

The Pigeon ArchiveThe Pigeon Archive - Lyndall Phelps
Shakespeare Barn | 18 July - 14 August
The Pigeon Archive was commissioned by Milton Keynes Gallery and supported by the Royal Pigeon Racing Association.

Lyndall Phelps is an Ely based artist (originally from Australia) whose painstaking practice is often research based, giving the viewer the chance to enter into her work via an accessible, factual route. The Pigeon Archive explores the little known, yet highly significant, role pigeons played in the First and Second World Wars and documents through photography, video and sculpture, the re-enactment of pigeon manoeuvres using re-constructed wartime equipment.

The artist was interested in devices that denied pigeons their natural behaviour, such as the message carriers that were strapped to their bodies with elastic harnessing and the releasing of pigeons from aircraft bound and attached to parachutes. It is poignant that, in reality, large numbers of pigeons lost their lives, through starvation, being killed by the enemy or exhaustion and exposure due to harsh conditions on homing flights.

Since the beginning of the 20th century pigeons have been used for surveillance purposes, escalating during both World Wars and in the Second World War every military aircraft leaving Britain was recommended to carry two pigeons. The Archive references the incongruous partnership between the humble pigeon and the Lancaster Bomber, the latter a symbol of cutting edge technology. Video footage taken by a pigeon wearing a light weight video camera harnessed to its body shows the Cambridgeshire Fenland from above, skies now relatively quiet, in sharp contrast to a time when military aircraft dominated.

This exhibition is sure to make you reconsider the dubious reputation of these humble birds.

Inge-LiseINGE-LISE GREAVES Pure & Simple
Fermoy Gallery Foyer
18 July - 14 August

“Light to a Scandinavian person is of the utmost importance. In winter during the short, dark days you long for spring. During this time you burn a lot of candles, whilst socialising indoors, waiting, waiting...” Inge-Lise Greaves 2010
Inge-Lise Greaves was born in Denmark and although she has spent half her life in England, she is still influenced by her native culture. She has lived and worked in King’s Lynn for 24 years as a textile artist and arts educator building herself a fine reputation, constantly developing, but never resting on her laurels. She is an avid recycler and constantly seeks new materials and devises innovative techniques. For the special occasion of the 60th King’s Lynn Festival which coincides happily with her own 60th birthday, Inge-Lise has produced a body of new work based on a personal response to the importance of light and the simple pleasures in life such as walks and the inspiration of nature and collected objects.
